Aberdeen Inspired Nights on the Green is back this summer with monthly street markets showcasing local food, drinks and entertainment from now until September.
The city centre, street food market runs from Friday afternoon until Sunday evening of each dedicated weekend, allowing you plenty opportunity to take a stroll down to the green to try out the delicious food and drinks that the market has to offer.
With it’s huge April success, finding 15,000 individuals flocking to the green to delve into the epitome of local hospitality and entertainment, you’ll want to be sure you do not miss the next instalment of this highly reputable event.
This year’s dates are as follows:
April 19th-21st May 24th-26th
May’s Inspired Nights on the Green Event
We strolled along to May’s event hoping to bask in the sunshine for hours. However, the unpredictable Aberdeen weather put a stop to this but for the time we did spend at the market, we truly made the most of the experience.
There was a variety of bar stalls from local Aberdeen bars and pubs, such as 99 Bar and Kitchen, serving refreshing cocktails, McGinty’s Meal An’ Ale serving prosecco and Soul Bar serving beer so there were options for all types of drinker. If you aren’t after an alcoholic beverage, don’t worry. There are also plenty of soft drinks and coffee available.
I opted to try a Tropical Collins from 99 Bar and Kitchen which went down an absolute treat. It is a gin-based drink full of tropical and citrusy flavours, garnished with the slightly extra leaf as you can see pictured. I’d definitely choose to have this again.
Now onto the food – my favourite part of any event.
The selection of food to choose from was just as diverse as the drink options which is great. This includes food from So Aberdeen providing hearty foods like wood-fired pizzas, Popsey’s Pancakes, perfect for the sweet-toothed out there, and my personal preferred food choice, Roots Catering.
Roots Catering is a pop-up food stall run by a lovely team that produces quality plant-based cuisine. Their menu aims to deliver the food we like, such as burgers and chicken tacos, but meat-free and delicious unlike some plant-based foods which taste like leaves, which is brilliant. I’m a huge advocate of eating less meat and with options like Roots, it makes becoming meat-free a far easier challenge as the food is just as good as any meat option.
We chose to share the Bloody Roots Burger, Crispy Bang Bang ‘Chicken’ Tacos and Loaded Fries.
The Bloody Roots Burger is made with a Beyond Meat burger patty, served in a toasted brioche bun with veggie bacon, caramelised onions, cheese and crack sauce, which tasted very similar to McDonald’s Big Mac sauce, much to my delight. McDonald’s is probably the one reason I couldn’t go completely vegetarian, so knowing that there are options starting to appear that can replace this need in my life is rather exciting indeed.
The burger is succulent and tastes just like any beef burger would. Honestly, I plan on giving one to a diehard meat eater soon to see if they notice that they aren’t eating meat. The sauce is bursting with flavour and I even enjoyed the caramelised onions. Usually, I don’t enjoy caramelised onions, I could even go as far as to say I hate them, but Roots had me enjoying them. I don’t know how they did it but keep it up.
The Crispy Bang Bang ‘Chicken’ Tacos were also a winner. These tacos filled with panko breadcrumb ‘chicken’ goujons, sweet and sour onions, pickled rainbow slaw, shiitake bacon and sriracha mayo are divine. The goujons are incredibly delicious with an outstanding likeness to chicken and melt in your mouth. These are a must try item!
Finally, but certainly not least, the Loaded Fries. This generous portion of fries is topped with lashings of caramelised onion, pulled rainbow slaw, sriracha mayo, crack sauce, shiitake bacon and cheese. These are some of the most exciting fries I’ve ever tasted. They are bursting with flavour and leave you wanting more.
I’d highly recommend giving Roots Catering a taste if you plan on visiting Inspired Nights on the Green in the next several months or you can now find them at weekends down at Aberdeen beach. They’ve just opened up their burger van making their outstanding food more accessible. I know where I’ll be next weekend!
If you are after a fun afternoon or evening of socialising surrounded by tasty local food and drinks, Inspired Nights on the Green is a solid choice. I’m now going to be a regular customer at these events and I hope they continue for many years to come. Maybe I’ll see you there!
